Licensing Laws

Security provider licences are issued for bodyguards, private investigators, crowd controllers, cash transit security officers, unarmed security officers, monitoring, security officers, dog patrol security officers, security advisers, security equipment installers and security firms. Individuals and firms may be penalised if they operate unlicensed or hire an unlicensed provider.

A person who works unlicensed in the security industry faces penalties of up to:

• $50 000 for the first offence
• $70 000 fine or six months imprisonment for the second offence
• $100 000 fine or 18 months imprisonment for the third offence

A company that operates unlicensed in the security industry faces penalties of up to:

• $250 000 fine for the first offence
• $350 000 fine for the second offence
• $500 000 fine for the third offence.

Anyone who hires an unlicensed security provider faces penalties of up to:

• $50 000 fine for the first offence
• $70 000 fine or six months imprisonment for the second offence
• $100 000 fine or 18 months imprisonment for the third offence.

Security Providers can be one of the following examples

• Security Advisers who provide advice about security equipment*, methods or principles
• Security Equipment *Installers who install, repair, service or maintain security   equipment

{* Security equipment is acoustic, electronic, mechanical or other equipment designed or adapted to provide, monitor or enhance property for protection}

• Security Monitoring Officers who monitor property using an electronic monitoring devices such as a visual recording system, a radio or remote alarm system.
• Security Firms who are people, partnerships or corporations that engage security providers

Its Important to check for a Licence

Ask the provider to show you their licence. Ensure the provider is licensed to perform the work you need them do. Also check that the licence has not expired.

You can also call 13 13 04 Monday to Friday 8 am to 6 pm to confirm that a provider’s licence is valid and current.

Play it safe only use licensed Security Providers and don’t risk a fine.
